The latest limited-time credit card spending bonuses to boost earnings in categories like groceries, streaming, and gas stations

Maximize your rewards with the latest limited-time credit card category spending bonuses.
Crystal Cox/Business Insider

This page includes information about the Discover it® Cash Back and Discover it® Student Cash Back products, which are currently not available on Business Insider and may be out of date.

This article is brought to you by the Personal Finance Insider team. It has not been reviewed, approved, or otherwise endorsed by any of the issuers listed. Some of the offers you see on the page are from our partners like Citi and American Express, but our coverage is always independent. Terms apply to the offers listed on this page.

Throughout the pandemic, banks have introduced new ways to earn and redeem rewards and added valuable benefits and perks to keep their credit cards at the top of customers' minds (and wallets). Issuers have also periodically increased rewards earnings in common quarantine spending categories, including grocery stores, streaming services, and food delivery.

As a result, many of us are earning more credit card points than ever, even if we've had to curb our spending and stay close to home. This is especially true for those who already make the most of cards with rotating quarterly bonus categories, like the Chase Freedom Flex℠ and Discover it® Cash Back .

Because these credit card spending bonuses eventually expire, and new offers pop up all the time to meet changing customer needs, it can be hard to keep track and maximize your rewards. To help, we've put together a list of the latest limited-time bonuses in the most popular categories, so you can choose the right credit card for your purchases.

Should you take advantage of credit card spending bonuses?

Limited-time credit card spending bonuses can be lucrative — especially if you're already making lots of purchases in these categories. But before you switch your spending to a card with a new category bonus, it's wise to compare the boosted earning rate — and the value of the rewards you'd receive — to what you'd otherwise earn by using one of the best rewards credit cards instead.

You might also skip an increased category bonus if the rewards currency doesn't appeal to you or if you're focused on saving a different type of points or miles for a specific redemption.

Bonuses for meeting spending thresholds

The Chase offers below are targeted and you'll need to activate the offer through the email you receive from Chase, or enter your card details here to see if you qualify.

Chase co-branded cards — earn bonus points

If you have a Chase co-branded card, like the United℠ Explorer Card, British Airways Visa Signature® Card, or IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card, check your email or the Chase MyBonus page for a targeted offer to earn bonus points for spending a specified amount on the card.

If you're eligible, you may receive an offer such as:

  • Earn 5 points or miles per dollar you spend on up to $1,500 in purchases from April 1 to June 30, 2021
  • Earn 6,000 points or miles when you spend $6,000 or more on purchases from April 1 to June 30, 2021
  • Earn 5,000 points or miles when you spend $3,000 or more on purchases from April 1 to June 30, 2021

The offers vary by card and not all cardholders qualify. I entered my card details on the Chase MyBonus page and got offers on my IHG® Rewards Club Premier Credit Card, Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card, and The World Of Hyatt Credit Card .

Select Amex business accounts — $25 statement credit for purchases of $500 or more

Some American Express small-business cards, including The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express and American Express Blue Business Cash™ Card, are eligible for an Amex Offer to earn a $25 statement credit on single purchases of $500 or more, up to 10 times through June 30, 2021. Activation is required, and your account must have been opened by November 1, 2020. (Eligibility for these offers is limited. Enrollment is required in the Amex Offers section of your account before redeeming).

JetBlue Plus card — earn Mosaic elite status

Big spenders can unlock JetBlue Mosaic elite status — which comes with two free checked bags, priority boarding, free inflight drinks, and access to upgrades — by spending $30,000 or more on the JetBlue Plus Card and earning 4,000 Mosaic qualifying points between January 1 and December 31, 2021.

Normally, this card awards Mosaic status to those who spend $50,000 or more per year, but due to the pandemic, JetBlue has lowered the requirements for 2021.

Grocery store bonuses

New Amex Platinum cardholders — 10x at US supermarkets

The Platinum Card® from American Express has one of the most compelling offers available right now. In addition to a welcome bonus of 75,000 points after you spend at least $5,000 in your first 6 months of card membership, new cardholders can earn 10x American Express Membership Rewards points on purchases at US supermarkets and US gas stations, on up to $15,000 in combined spending (then 1x) in the first six months of account opening.

Combined with valuable perks like up to $30 per month in PayPal statement credits from January to June (Eligibility for this offer is limited. Enrollment is required in the Amex Offers section of your account before redeeming), up to $100 in Saks credits per year, and up to $200 per year in Uber credits, the grocery bonus makes the Platinum Card a solid choice even if you're not traveling right now.

Chase Sapphire cards — up to 3x on groceries

Until April 30, 2021, you'll automatically earn 3x Chase Ultimate Rewards points on groceries with the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and 2x points with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, on up to $1,000 in spending each month (then 1x). Normally, these cards earn 1 point per dollar spent at grocery stores, so this is an easy opportunity to earn more points on household purchases you'd make anyway.

In addition, you can stack this bonus with Chase's Pay Yourself Back feature, which gets you more value from your points when you redeem them toward grocery, gas, and home improvement store purchases, as well as charitable donations. When you use this option, your points are worth 50% more if you have the Sapphire Reserve, or 25% more if you're a Chase Sapphire Preferred cardholder, through September 30, 2021.

From April through June, the Chase Freedom bonus categories are gas stations and home improvement stores. You'll have to activate the bonus by June 14 to get in on the deal, but once you activate, you'll receive the bonus on eligible spending all the way back to the first day of the quarter.

Discover it Q2 rotating category bonus — 5% back at gas stations

For the second quarter of 2021, the Discover it® Cash Back and Discover it® Student Cash Back include gas stations as one of their rotating bonus categories. Once you activate the bonus, you can earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined spending at gas stations, wholesale clubs, and on select streaming services (then 1%) through June 30, 2021.

New Amex Platinum cardholders — 10x at US gas stations

Both the Discover it® Cash Back card and the Discover it® Student Cash Back offer 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined spending in categories that rotate each quarter (then 1% back) once you activate.

From April through June, the Discover 5% bonus categories are streaming services, wholesale clubs, and gas stations.

Capital One Savor cards — earn up to 4% back on streaming subscriptions

Staying home has meant more consumers are turning to streaming services for entertainment, so this is another easy category to maximize for a lot of people. Capital One introduced a limited-time cash-back bonus on streaming purchases with its Savor cards in 2020, and it's been extended through April 30, 2021.

With the Capital One® Savor® Cash Rewards Credit Card, you'll earn 4% cash back, and with the Capital One® SavorOne® Cash Rewards Credit Card, you'll earn 3% cash back on streaming services like NetFlix, Spotify, and Hulu . This is in addition to the regular bonuses for dining and entertainment (which doesn't normally include streaming) on these cards.

    Dining and restaurant bonuses

It's hard to beat the transferable bonus points you'd earn with some of the best cards for dining, like 4x American Express Membership Rewards points with the recently refreshed American Express® Gold Card or 5x Citi ThankYou points with the Citi Prestige® Card .

Chase Sapphire cards — earn 10x points on Chase Dining purchases

Through June 30, 2021, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders will earn 10x points when they use their card to pay for their Chase Dining purchase, on up to $500 in total spending.

Through Chase's partnership with Tock, cardholders can order takeout and delivery and make reservations at fine-dining establishments through their Chase Ultimate Rewards online account.

There are also Virtual Dining Experiences offered occasionally, including cooking demonstrations from well-known chefs and culinary gift sets with ingredients. Keep in mind the 10x bonus only applies through purchases through Chase Dining, and not directly with restaurants or the Tock platform.

Amex Delta, Hilton, and Marriott personal cards — up to $20 per month in dining credits

Eligible cardholders with American Express Delta, Hilton, or Marriott personal cards can activate an Amex Offer to earn up to $20 per month in statement credits toward dining purchases through the end of 2021 (Eligibility for these offers is limited. Enrollment is required in the Amex Offers section of your account before redeeming).

The amount of the monthly credit varies depending on the card; for example, the Hilton Honors American Express Card gets up to $5 in dining credit, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card offers up to $10, and Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card members receive up to $20. To qualify, your card must have been open as of January 1, 2021 (Eligibility for these offers is limited. Enrollment is required in the Amex Offers section of your account before redeeming).

    Bonuses on wireless purchases

Amex Delta, Hilton, and Marriott business cards — up to $20 per month in wireless credits

Similar to the new dining credits for co-branded cards, Amex has added up to $20 per month in wireless credits for eligible Delta, Hilton, and Marriott small-business cardholders who had open accounts as of January 1, 2021.

These are also Amex Offers that require activation, and the amount of the monthly credit varies by card. For instance, The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card receives up to $10 per month, Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card up to $15 per month, and Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card up to $20 per month through the end of 2021. (Eligibility for this offer is limited. Enrollment is required in the Amex Offers section of your account before redeeming).

    Drugstore bonuses

If you don't have the Chase Freedom Unlimited® or Chase Freedom Flex℠, both of which offer 3% back (3x points) at drugstores, consider one of these limited-time bonuses instead.

Select Chase co-branded cards — 5x at drugstores

Combined with the targeted grocery and gas bonus mentioned above, select co-branded Chase cardholders can earn 5x points or miles on up to $1,500 in purchases across these categories from April 1 to June 30, 2021.
